Hoists are powered lifting devices that literally haul items upwards or, alternatively, lower them. The most common types of hoist consist of either a wire rope or chain that can be raised or lowered by pulley. Some hoists can be manually operated while others are powered by battery, electricity or air.

While wire rope hoists are generally lighter to handle than their chain counterparts their size, and therefore their lifting and load bearing capabilities, are limited by the diameter of the drum around which the wire rope is coiled.

A common type of hoist in use is the chain block hoist used for moving objects vertically up or down. Many hoists are suspended from the ceiling or laid across a solid structure such as a beam.

Of the powered hoist versions electric chain hoists are generally rated to be reliable, safe, and easy to maintain and greatly aid productivity in the workplace. Air powered hoists are particularly suitable for use in dangerous or hazardous environments because they do not produce sparks and are therefore considered safer. Portable, battery and hand-powered hoists are, of course, the easiest types of hoist to manoeuvre.
