Borers are machine tools concerned with the manufacturing process known as boring.
Boring is the process of enlarging and shaping an existing hole (created by either drilling or by cast) with a single-point cutting tool (or sometimes by a boring head containing several). This cutting tool, which is usually made out of either M2 and M3 high-speed steel (or HSS) or P10 and P01 carbide, can be positioned to either cut horizontally or vertically into the internal surface of the work piece. The existing hole can either be simply enlarged, or a tapered hole can be produced.

Boring can be done on massively different scales. Smaller-scale boring can be produced on a lathe, whilst larger work pieces are worked on by a boring mill. As with most heavy milling machinery, a coolant is required to help stop damage to the cutting tool due to excess heat, usually through a hollow passageway in the boring bar so it can run freely.

Several factors need to be taken into consideration when using a boring mill:

A large length-to-diameter ratio is not preferred, as this can lead to cutting tool deflection which in turn can cause inaccuracies in the finished piece.

An existing hole that reaches all the way through the length of the work piece (a through hole)is much preferred to one that does not (blind hole).

Interrupted work surfaces, where the cutting tool and surface have discontinuous contact—should be avoided.

The control systems of borers can either be manual, or can be computer-controlled to allow for much more accurate and consistent boring.
