Pallets are commonly known as flat transport structures which support goods in a stable fashion while being lifted by forklift, pallet jack, front loader or other jacking device. However more designs have evolved over time including the introduction of box pallets and cage pallets. A pallet is the structural foundation of a unit load which allows handling and storage to be carried out more efficiently. Goods or shipping containers are often placed on a pallet and secured with strapping, stretch wrap or shrink wrap and shipped.
While most pallets are made of wood, plastic pallets and metal pallets also exist. Each material has advantages and disadvantages relative to the others. The cheapest pallets are made from softwood and are often considered to be expendable which can be discarded as trash along with other wrapping elements, at the end of the trip. These pallets are simple stringer pallets, and can be lifted from two sides. Slightly more complex, are hardwood block pallets, plastic pallets and metal pallets as these can be lifted from all four sides.
