A storage tank is a container which is usually used for holding liquids, and  sometimes for compressed gases. Storage tanks are often cylindrical in shape and perpendicular to the ground with flat bottoms, and a fixed or floating roof. There are usually many environmental regulations applied to the design and operation of tank storage this is often dependant on the nature of the fluid contained within. Aboveground storage tanks (AST) differ from underground (UST) storage tanks in the kinds of regulations that are applied.

Storage tanks and storage vessels are available in many shapes: vertical and horizontal cylindrical; open top and closed top; flat bottom, cone bottom, slope bottom and dish bottom. Large tanks tend to be vertical cylindrical, or to have rounded corners which enable them to easier withstand hydraulic induced pressure of contained liquid. Most  water storage tanks or fuel tanks which are both used for handling liquids during transportation are designed to handle varying degrees of pressure. Since most liquids can spill, evaporate, or seep through even the smallest opening, special consideration must made for their safe and secure handling. This usually involves building a bunding  or containment dike, around the tank, so that any leakage may be safely contained. These are sometimes referred to as bunded fuel tanks.

Some storage tanks need a floating roof in addition to or in lieu of the fixed roof and structure. This floating roof rises and falls along with the liquid level inside the tank. This thereby decreases the vapour space above the liquid level. Floating roofs are considered a safety requirement as well as a pollution prevention measure for many industries. While steel continues to be one of the most popular choices for tanks, GRP and thermoplastic, polyethylene and fibreglass tanks have more recently increased in popularity. They offer lower build costs and greater chemical resistance, especially for storage of speciality chemicals.

The tanks can be supplied with a wide range of custom fuel dispensing equipment to suit virtually every situation. Fully compliant with PPG2 guidelines, our range of bulk fuel storage tanks have been designed and built with safety, security, access and maintenance needs in mind. They are also suitable for use with both Avgas and Jet A-1.

  • Suction line dip tube for fuel delivery – 1½” grade 304 stainless
  • Fill point & pump cabinet with anodised aluminium roller shutter door or heavy hinging steel door
  • Suitable for use with Avgas and Jet A-1
  • Fill point – 2” BSP stainless steel with Self Climat OPD Overfill Valve DN50 type NT- Jet A1 / Avgas
